It opens every day of the week, has never had to close and is manned by volunteers. Most volunteers do a 3 hour shift once a week, some do more. The shop has a full time manager, Corenna Jennings who comments \u201cMany of our volunteers have been with us since the beginning and we need to celebrate their dedication\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Over the years more than 100 people have been volunteers. Currently there are around 80 and some of the younger volunteers have helped as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award. Corenna added \u201cWe are always seeking new volunteers\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Through fund raising, grant income and a share issue to over 500 local residents, the \u00a3250,000 had been raised to make this a reality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The shop incorporates a Post Office with Julie Chavasse as the Post Office Manager. It also has a cafe with Wi-Fi access. This social aspect provides a place to meet, help for those in need and a source of information.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Over the ten years the shop has won various awards and was visited by the Duke of Kent when he opened the enhanced King George\u2019s field.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.barfordvillageshop.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Data-Privacy-Notice-BVS-May-2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; text-decoration-line: underline;\">General Data Protection Regulation<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Barford Village Shop has donated \u00a36250\u00a0 for new play equipment outside the shop and \u00a337k to the Barford Youth Community Centre fund<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We have been successfully trading since our opening day on the 1st November 2008. The shop was set up to give the profits back to the community. The general history of Barford Community Charity is that it was set up at the same time as the shop and actively helped the shop fund-raising, contributing \u00a321k from village donations.\u00a0 Since then it has acted to support community projects when other sources of funding have been exhausted \u2013 to make the funds stretch further.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ox-2690ca8bd4-MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\">As a result, the charity has supported the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.barfordplayingfields.org\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> King George`s playing fields<\/a> \u00a362k, Sherbourne street lighting \u00a33.5k, school computers \u00a31.5k, flagpole for the village green to commemorate the Queen`s Golden\u00a0Jubilee of\u00a0\u00a3622, church chairs \u00a32k, FABS \u00a32k for a piano for the school and disabled access\u00a0for the church \u00a3170.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ox-2690ca8bd4-MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Every year the shop donates a Christmas tree for the village green. \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">For at least two generations the Singleton family ran the village shop, known formally as Barford News\u00a0and Post Office, until Kay and Terry Cunningham retired and sold the property. \u00a0The new owner\u00a0promised that it would continue to be run as a shop. \u00a0He had no intention of running it himself as he was an Estate Agent. \u00a0He offered the property at a rental figure well above a viable price for such a small business. \u00a0So Barford was without a village shop or Post Office for many months.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We immediately gave up walking around the village, didn`t meet friends collecting papers or buying milk, our children had nowhere to spend their pocket money and we had a 6 mile round trip to buy groceries. The shop closed for 6 months and then was opened by a tenant who lived outside the village, so opening hours were limited and stock range restricted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The shop closed for a final time in February 2006.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">At that time there was a general move to close small Post Offices so the villagers were concerned that they would lose it forever. \u00a0It was discovered that there was a time limit by which it had to be to re-opened. \u00a0 So two villagers investigated how it could be re-opened in an existing space. \u00a0The back \u2018changing room\u2019 in the Memorial Hall was found to be suitable as far as the Post Office was concerned &#8211; with a lot of modification. \u00a0So the Post Office re-opened &#8211; with the help of a few valiant volunteers &#8211; \u00a0but only for a few hours each week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">As time went on there was a great build up of concern about the absence of a village shop. \u00a0The The Chair of the JPC believed that it should not be the role or the responsibility of the JPC to run such a project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">An open village meeting was held in May 2006 attended by more than 20 villagers, some of whom were prepared to take action. There was a unanimous vote to create a new village shop and the Barford Village Shop Action Group was formed.\u00a0We had\u00a0to look for possible locations, which services and stock to supply and how we could fund the initiative. Meanwhile, the JPC had also become involved, and did a lot of work which resulted in the sub Post Office operating 3 afternoons a week in the Memorial Hall starting in November 2006.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Barford Village Shop CIC was formed as a legal entity to control the shop during set up and future running. Shares were sold at \u00a320, restricted to one per person. The original 3 members of the Action Group were joined by 2 others and formed the board of directors, each bringing various skills and help spread the workload. They were assisted by many villagers who helped out in all manner of ways and without whom the shop would not be what it is today.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.byfakerolexforsale.com\/product\/rolex-day-date-m128345rbr-0054-mens-rolex-calibre-2836-2813-12mm\/\"><img style=\"height: 2px; width: 1px;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.barfordvillageshop.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_4833.jpg?resize=624%2C416\" alt=\"rolex day date m128345rbr 0054 mens rolex calibre 2836 2813 12mm\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">By December 2006 we had<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Decided to run a community shop following a ViRSA model<\/li>\n<li>Identified a site and prepared a planning application<\/li>\n<li>Carried out a village survey of what stock and services the shop should have<\/li>\n<li>Held our first fundraising event<\/li>\n<li>Applied for our first grant<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">2007 was spent fundraising, completing grant applications and encouraging villagers to give donations and loans<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Barford Charity was set up to assist in fundraising as well as to act as a vehicle for distributing profits in later years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Planning permission was granted in February 2007 for an extension to the Memorial Hall in Church Street. Detailed architectural drawings were produced with tenders being invited from local builders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Meanwhile work was underway on the shop layout and range planning with potential suppliers being identified, many of them local.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We also had to negotiate the release of a covenant on the village green, apply for the required licence agreements, negotiate the move of the Post Office, investigate heating, cooling and till systems and stock management, banking arrangements, lighting, flooring and planning the operational side of the shop and what we wanted to achieve for the community. We had to create documents to fulfil our legal requirements \u2013 risk assessment, COSSH, Health and safety, as well as Staff Manuals and volunteer rotas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The tender was finally allocated in January 2008 with the Sod Cutting ceremony taking place in February. The build started and swiftly completed within budget and on schedule with the keys being handed over to the village on 2nd August 2008.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The internal fit out then began.
